USMNT downs Dragons behind brilliant Balogun and tremendous Tillman to advance to Round of 16 in front of full-house crowd for Bay Area World Cup finale

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (June 25, 2026) — The San Francisco Bay Area hosted its sixth and final match of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ in grandiose fashion as the United States defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 on Wednesday night in the Round of 32 before yet another full house of 68,827 fans.

The U.S. Men’s National Team was hosting its first World Cup knockout stage match on home soil since July 4, 1994—a 1-0 loss to eventual champion Brazil in the Round of 16 that ironically also took place in the Bay Area at Stanford Stadium. Thirty-two years later and celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the Stars and Stripes entered tonight’s contest the favorites after clinching Group D by winning their initial two group stage matches for the first time since 1930. On the other hand, the upset-minded Zmajevi (Dragons) from Bosnia and Herzegovina arrived in the South Bay after a third-place campaign in Group B to earn their first-ever berth in the knockout stage.

The first clear chance of the match occurred in the 10th minute when Bosnia and Herzegovina center back Tarik Muharemović pinged a long ball for veteran star forward Edin Džeko, who hauled it in and with his back to the net, fed Ermedin Demirović at the edge of the box on the middle right channel. But his subsequent shot was right at American goalkeeper Matt Freese, who easily swatted it away with both gloves. One minute later, Kerim Alajbegović attempted to score directly off a corner kick, but Freese also batted away the ambitious olímpico try.

In the 15th minute, the USMNT finally took the initiative with their first chance of note against a loaded Bosnian low block. Antonee “Jedi” Robinson stormed down the right wing and sliced a low cross for forward Folarin Balogun in the box but he flubbed the attempt wide right. Three minutes later, American midfielder Weston McKennie received a long-range ball from the back half, took two dribbles down the right wing and unleashed an outswinger of a cross. However, it was deflected by Bosnian goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, who collided with Robinson and managed to affect the trajectory just enough to cause his charging header in the middle of the six-yard box to float over the crossbar. Vasilj received medical attention afterward but was eventually back on his feet.

In minute 31, the United States punished Bosnia and Herzegovina for trying to play out of the back. Midfielder Malik Tillman stole the ball from Ivan Šunjić and pushed it to McKennie, who spotted out Balogun near the center of the box’s edge with a bouncing pass. The AS Monaco striker chopped the ball down with his right foot, shifted to his left and fired it past Vasilj into the net. But the flag was up and Balogun was ruled offside, negating the goal and keeping the match scoreless.

Minute 40 was marked by a little American ingenuity. After receiving the ball in the box in the middle left channel, Tillman dribbled away from goal and toward the corner flag, disguising an abrupt backheel for forward Christian Pulisic. The USMNT superstar then chipped the ball toward the far post but no one was on the other end, leading Bosnian defender Sead Kolašinać to make a leisurely clearance.

Finally in minute 45, the Americans enjoyed the breakthrough when their high press caused Vasilj to launch a ball that dropped before reaching midfield. The ball was cut down and one-touched to Tillman, who executed a through ball that was deflected twice to an opportunistic Balogun, who shifted it to his left in the box as he did with the previously annulled goal and swept it underneath a pouncing Vasilj to give the USA a 1-0 lead at last. With this one confirmed on the scoreboard, Balogun pulled out basketball star LeBron James’ “silencer” celebration after scoring his third goal of the tournament to send the home fans into a frenzy.

In the eighth minute of stoppage time, Balogun almost bagged a brace when USMNT midfielder Tyler Adams headed a ball for Balogun, who somehow could not get full force into the shot and bounced it off the crossbar. Brazilian referee Raphael Claus ultimately blew the whistle to signal the end of the first half with the Americans in narrow control.

After intermission, Mauricio Pochettino’s men remained on the front foot, while Sergej Barbarez’s squad now searched for answers down one goal with 45 minutes remaining. In minute 59, Bosnia and Herzegovina charged into the attacking third and Kolasinać’s promising cross from the left wing flew into the box for Demirović, but USMNT captain Tim Ream and the backline cleared it.

Then in minute 61, disaster struck for the Americans when Balogun challenged for a 50-50 ball and his right cleat not only grazed Muharemović’s right calf, but also clamped the Bosnian defender’s ankle. After a VAR review, Claus showed Balogun a red card and sent him off, reducing the USMNT to 10 players and ensuring their leading scorer would miss the next round should they advance. Balogun also became the fourth player in World Cup history to score a goal and get a red card in the same match, following Brazilian luminary Garrincha in the 1962 semifinals vs. Chile, his fellow Canarinho in the 2002 quarterfinals vs. England and French icon Zinedine Zidane in the 2006 final.

Now with a man advantage, the Zmajevi aimed to seize the moment. In minute 66, a Bosnian cross from the right wing was not fully cleared by Ream and Demirović rifled a shot, but Freese was in position to smother it. Two minutes later, Wisconsin-born Esmir Bajraktarević, now representing Bosnia and Herzegovina, picked a loose ball from the sky and down into the box, but his turn and rolling attempt was also straight at the American keeper.

With the partisan crowd imploring their team to hunker down and defend their narrow lead, and the Americans dutifully obliged, packing the box tightly and blocking a barrage of Bosnian blows. Then an occasion to go on the offensive bore fruit. In minute 79, another no-look pass from Tillman resulted in a one-two with McKennie, who crossed it back to Tillman in front of the six-yard box. The Bayer Leverkusen man tried to shoot but could only push it forward; however, while an onrushing Pulisic was in place for the rebound and scored, he was in an offside position and the goal came off the scoreboard.

But just like in the first half, the Americans would not be denied, and in minute 82, they would double their advantage. Sergiño Dest won a free kick when he dribbled at theedge of the box on the middle left channel and was grabbed around the waist with two hands by Stjepan Radeljić. Not only was the Bosnian center back booked for the offense, Barbarez was shown a yellow card as well for contesting the call. Soon after, Tillman made the most of the set-piece opportunity. He stood over the ball, then curled it for the near post and over the wall. Vasilj dove to his right and got a glove on it, but not enough to keep it out of the back of the net and the USA took a commanding 2-0 lead despite being shorthanded. Tillman, who would be named Michelob ULTRA Superior Player of the Match for his box-to-box ubiquity, sprinted behind the goal line in elation and was quickly joined by his teammates.

In the 90th minute, Bosnia and Herzegovina won a free kick in a dangerous position but the back line cleared it immediately. Moments later, Claus announced 10 minutes of stoppage time and the Bosnians’ sense of urgency was heightened even more needing to score twice to keep their World Cup hopes afloat. Two minutes later, Alajbegović uncorked a curler for the far post that screeched by the ear of defender Alex Freeman but sailed just wide. As the Bosnians continued to push numbers forward, they left themselves vulnerable for a counterattack.

Moments later, the Americans almost buried an insurance goal when a pair of second-half substitutes, Sebastian Berhalter and Ricardo Pepi, almost connected for the third. But after Muharemović cleared it, Freeman jumped on the ball outside the box, but his shot was too strong. In the ninth minute of stoppage time, second-half addition Ermin Mahmić forged ahead with fresh legs past multiple defenders, but hammered his attempt wide left, and the Bosnians’ last stand was complete. With the familiar sound of “U-S-A! U-S-A!” inundating the Northern California air, that final salvo led to Claus’ final whistle and a 2-0 United States victory. The crowd subsequently serenaded its American heroes with the song “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver—an American icon whose untimely passing took place a 90-minute drive south from SF Bay Area Stadium in Monterey Bay nearly 30 years ago.

Tonight’s result ended two droughts for the United States. For one, they earned their first World Cup knockout stage triumph since 2002 when current San Jose Earthquakes head coach Bruce Arena steered the USMNT to the famous “Dos a Cero” 2-0 triumph over México in the Round of 16. But they also broke a 10-game losing streak against European teams since December 2021 when they beat, coincidentally enough, Bosnia and Herzegovina 1-0.

This time around, the United States advances to the Round of 16, where they will face Belgium at Seattle Stadium in Seattle on Monday, July 6. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT, with the match airing domestically on FOX in English and Telemundo in Spanish. With the USMNT now three wins away from reaching their first-ever World Cup final, the dream to do it on home soil is more alive than ever.

The Bay Area Host Committee thanks everyone for their support throughout the FIFA World Cup™. Tonight’s attendance figure capped a perfect six of six games at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium to reach at least 99% or 100% capacity, averaging well over 68,000 spectators per match. Combined with the series of watch parties around the region, including the official Soccer Celebration at nearby San Pedro Square Market in San Jose surpassing 400,000 total fans since the tournament’s outset June 11, the tournament’s overwhelming success has firmly planted the Bay Area as one of the true soccer capitals of North America.
