Austria Pulls Away Late After Olwan Scores Jordan’s First World Cup Goal

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (June 16, 2026) — The San Francisco Bay Area successfully hosted its second match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup™ as Austria pulled away late from Jordan 3-1 on Tuesday night in Group J play. Though Ali Olwan would score Jordan’s first ever World Cup goal and earn Michelob ULTRA Superior Player of the Match honors, a stunning long-range smash from Romano Schmid and second-half substitute Marko Arnautović’s involvement in the final two goals propelled Austria to victory.

With Austria returning to soccer’s grandest tournament after a 28-year hiatus and Jordan making its debut since being first eligible for qualification four decades ago, the stage was set for a historic clash between two hopeful nations, and the teams did not disappoint the crowd of 68,527 fans.

The initial phase of the match was marked by physical play from a Jordan back line and a patient Austrian front line trying to solve it. Ultimately, it would be Austria who opened the scoring in minute 21 when they recycled the ball through the midfield until it got to Romano Schmid, who unleashed a geometry-defying bender from the edge of the box past the outstretched arms of Jordanian goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila and into the net to make it 1-0 for the Burschen.

Just one minute later, Jordan nearly had the instant answer when a corner kick resulted in forward Ali Olwan heading it over goalkeeper Alexander Schlager and off the crossbar. In the 34th minute, Olwan was the danger man once more, charging down the right wing and blasting a shot that Schlager parried away. The ball then rolled to an opportunistic Mousa Al Tamari, who one-timed his shot but it was blocked by a well-positioned Philipp Lienhart. The pacy Jordan wingers continued to push forward through stoppage time, but referee Dahane Beida’s whistle signaled the end of the first half with Al Nashama still trailing 1-0.

After intermission, Jamal Sellami’s squad didn’t take long to equalize. In minute 50, Olwan hauled in a deep pass from Noor Alrawabdeh and cut into the box, subsequently aiming for the far post. The curler was spectacular as it hugged the post and tickled the twine to give the Middle Eastern nation their first ever goal in the World Cup.

With the game now deadlocked 1-1, Austria appeared to recapture the lead in the 63rd minute. After Abulaila whiffed on punching away a corner kick, the ball bounced off Austrian defender Stefan Posch’s arm in the six-yard box before falling to Arnautović. The forward took a touch before hammering it into the corner of the net. After a lengthy VAR review, however, the goal was annulled for handball.

But Ralf Rangnick’s men would not be denied, and another set piece would doom Jordan in the 76th minute. With the ball in the box, Arnautović jockeyed for position and it bounced off Jordan defender Yazan Alarab’s back in the unluckiest of fashions into the net to put Austria back up.

Now leading 2-1, Austria pushed for an insurance goal. Arnautović almost added one in the second minute of stoppage time when he broke free in a one-on-one situation, but Abulaila denied him at point-blank range. The Burschen would eventually net the third in the waning seconds of the match, when Jordan defender Salim Obaid was ruled by a VAR review to block a ball with his hand in the box in an unnatural position. A penalty kick was awarded and Arnautović converted from the spot in the 12th minute of stoppage time, burying the ball in the left corner for the final 3-1 margin.

Jordan’s efforts to produce one last bit of magic fell short, but nonetheless, Al Nashama made their country proud. However, it would be the Austrians who would take all three points from the pitch tonight to keep pace with Group J leaders Argentina.

Both teams return to action Monday, June 22. Austria travels to Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas, to face defending World Cup champion Argentina at 10 a.m. PT. Meanwhile, Jordan will stay in Santa Clara to take on Algeria in San Francisco Bay Area Stadium later that night at 8 p.m. PT.

The next match in San Francisco Bay Area Stadium will take place between Türkiye and Paraguay in a Group D clash on Friday, June 19, at 8 p.m. PT.
