Bay Area Host Committee Announces FIFA World Cup 2026 Exceeded Economic Impact Projections, Generating Approximately $850 Million for Bay Area Region

Post-Event Report Shows Bay Area Increased its Projected Impact by Approximately $300 Million, Driven by a Rise in Daily Visitor Spending Across the Region

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – October 1, 2026 – The Bay Area Host Committee (BAHC) today announced the official post-event economic impact from FIFA World Cup 2026, revealing that the six matches hosted in the Bay Area, including a Round of 32 match, generated an estimated ~$850 million in total economic activity for the Bay Area region, exceeding initial 2024 projections and demonstrating the substantial value of hosting the world's largest sporting event.

The report, developed by global management consulting firm Boston Consulting Group (BCG) on behalf of BAHC, shows economic benefits distributed across the region, with Santa Clara County capturing approximately $410 million, San Francisco County approximately $240 million, and the greater Bay Area counties approximately $200 million. The results also reflect positive impacts on Bay Area workers and local government coffers, with approximately $345 million in labor income and $30 million in fiscal revenues to local governments. The Rest of Bay Area figure includes Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Solano, and Sonoma counties, underscoring how the benefits of the tournament reached communities across all 10 counties of the Bay.

“The world saw what we’ve known all along — the Bay Area is a world-class sports city that excels in bringing people together, welcoming fans from around the globe, and delivering an extraordinary World Cup experience,” said California Governor Gavin Newsom. “This success was a true team effort, and I could not be more excited for the major sports events to come in the Bay Area.”

FIFA World Cup 2026 activity supported approximately 5,100 jobs across the region and drew an estimated 240,000 visitors from outside the Bay Area, underscoring the tournament's reach across the region's hospitality, retail, and service sectors.

BAHC's June 2024 pre-event report projected a regional economic impact range of $480-630 million. The post-event estimate of ~$850 million reflects an increase of approximately $300 million, driven primarily by a rise in daily visitor spending.

“Hosting FIFA World Cup 2026 elevated our global reputation, strengthened community bonds, and will pay dividends for years to come,” said Zaileen Janmohamed, President & CEO of the Bay Area Host Committee. “The world's attention on our region showcased the Bay Area as a premier destination for major international events, brought neighbors together through watch parties and shared celebration, and will continue to fuel future tourism as visitors who experienced our hospitality choose to return and recommend the Bay to friends and family. We’re already seeing reports of record-breaking tourism in the region, and we expect that trend to continue.

The comprehensive analysis was conducted using a Multi-regional Input-Output model within IMPLAN economic modeling software, incorporating 2026-dollar inputs and reflecting the most current Bay Area economic data available.

Beyond FIFA World Cup 2026, the Bay Area Host Committee's recent slate of marquee events, including Super Bowl LX and NBA All-Star 2025, has driven a combined total of approximately $1.9 billion in economic impact across the 10 Bay Area counties. Together, these events supported an estimated 11,000 full-time equivalent jobs across industries, drew approximately 470,000 visitors from outside the Bay Area, and generated approximately 385,000 room-nights booked in local accommodations.

“Successfully securing and hosting the NBA All-Star Game, Super Bowl LX, and FIFA World Cup 2026 in the span of just 18 months is a testament to what the Bay Area can deliver on the world's biggest stages,” added Janmohamed. “Together, these events have generated nearly $1.9 billion in economic impact for our region, a powerful reflection of what's possible when our communities, businesses, and civic leaders unite behind a shared vision. And now we know there’s even more benefit to come. With WNBA All-Star in 2027 and MLB All-Star in 2028, we will continue the incredible momentum of the past two years and directly increase positive economic impact for the Bay.”
