Santa Clara City Council Approves Financial Assignment Agreement for FIFA World Cup 2026, Securing a No-Risk, All-Reward Deal for the City
Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara will play host to 6 FIFA World Cup™ matches in the summer of 2026.
SANTA CLARA, CA (February 12, 2025) — Last night, the Santa Clara City Council and Santa Clara Stadium Authority approved a financial assignment agreement, marking a major milestone in preparations for hosting FIFA World Cup matches at Levi’s Stadium in 2026. This agreement ensures a seamless and financially responsible event, with the Bay Area Host Committee (BAHC) assuming all expenses related to stadium field and bowl modifications, and the city’s public safety preplanning, event security, training, and equipment needs—at no cost to Santa Clara.
“This agreement reaffirms what we have said from the start—this is a no-risk, all-reward opportunity for the City of Santa Clara,” said Zaileen Janmohamed, President and CEO of the Bay Area Host Committee. “We are ready to take on these responsibilities, allowing the city and its residents to fully reap the economic benefits of hosting the world’s biggest sporting event.”
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to generate between $270 million and $360 million in economic impact across the Bay Area, with Santa Clara directly benefiting from increased tourism, job creation, and spending at local businesses. The city will see a significant financial boost through:
A ticket surcharge on all FIFA World Cup matches at Levi’s Stadium, generating additional revenue for the Santa Clara Stadium Authority.
Upgrades to Levi's Stadium funded by the Bay Area Host Committee, including adaptable seating and other enhancements that will help attract major events in the future.
Revenue for the city’s general fund from hotel bookings, restaurant spending, and other tourism-related activities as hundreds of thousands of visitors come to Santa Clara.
Additionally, the Bay Area Host Committee is actively working with regional partners to secure federal and state funding for safety, security, and transportation improvements, ensuring smooth event operations across the region.
This agreement not only secures Santa Clara’s place on the global stage but also reinforces the Bay Area Host Committee’s long-term mission to bring world-class sporting events to the region. With the FIFA World Cup and Super Bowl LX on the horizon, the Bay Area will become the first region in history to host both events in the same year, strengthening its position as a premier destination for international sports.
